Unplanned Farmers’ Market Trip

I had to take my car in to get my flat tire fixed. Well, actually, first I had to call AAA to come and pump it up, and then we went to get it fixed and were told that we really needed new tires as well as a bunch of other work done to the car… Quite an expensive flat tire… Anyway, the car place is right next to a Farmers’ Market. We were lucky and the rain stopped for a little while, and we decided to make the best out of a not so great situation and enjoyed the market. The toddler was particularly interested in the puddles…

Since today is our CSA delivery day, I didn’t want to buy too much, but I picked up two bunches of kale (one can never have enough kale!), tomatoes, as well as some Indian food. The Indian food samples were delicious, and I got sort of carried away and bought things without a plan… Oh well… It happens.

Question: What was your most recent (unexpected) food splurge buy?

Be well,
Andrea

  1. That looks glorious!

I bought pumpkin seeds today. I think that I shall toss them with spices and dehydrate them. Hopefully it works!

When I lived in S.D. and had both my CSA And the luxury of fab farmer's markets I seriously had to really plan out my produce/eats as to not waste anything! I adore your stash and the photos...nice!

And thanks for the retreat compliments and yes, I would love!!! to see you, even for a day. I sure hope you can make it!! :)

  4. Oh UGH, sorry about your car. I was just talking about Triple A with my friends, about how they aren't the best in some situations, but other times they rock!

Anyway, love your food splurge, and as for me, it's been a while since I've splurged with food. My last food splurge was at Trader Joe's, I bought extra dark chocolate and some frozen stuff I don't usually buy. It was fun :)

Love the Chaboni, by the way, SOOO good!

  7. I know we refer to a lot of the awesome food pics on blogs as Food Porn but I have to say, your pictures of the Farmers Markets in California are the true Food Porn to me. I love those crazy looking radishes! And the tomatos. We NEVER and I mean NEVER get tomatos that look like that!

My last unexpected food splurge was when I found Almond Breeze on sale at a health food store in Winnipeg for $2.50 a litre. I pay $4.50 a litre in my town. I bought 12. I'm all stocked up!

  8. I love farmer's markets, I can't help but buy one of everything. And then I have to figure out what to do with all of it. My food splurge is always an exotic fruit from afar like mangosteen, guava, or seafood like dungeness crab.

  9. Is this the Cupertino market? Oh, I love that one, though, I don't get to it too often. But it's a really good-sized one, and has such a wide array of vendors.

  10. The Indian stuff looks so good. Great looking market and if you are gonna get stuck having car work done at leats you had something cool to do while you waited. I usually get studck watching TV or playing on my iPhone and burning up the battery. I don't think I have had an unexpected purchase here since there are limited places to go to buy anyway. I'll say last weekend we were driving around taking spirit house photos and stopped in a village where our landlords own a grocery store, so we popped in for a donut only cause we were there. The unexpected part was that they didn't let us pay for them.

  11. I'm glad that you got something good come out of your trip! I can't wait for the farmers market near my house to start up once again in the spring/summer.

Last unplanned food splurge?? I'd have to say a bunch of new grains I'm trying out from the bulk bins... not on the list, but I'd eventually try them out.

  12. Indian food at your farmer's market? That's wonderful! I haven't been to the farmer's market in over a month :( ... I'm not even sure if it's still running during the winter. Yours looks great though! Are those oranges local?

  13. Do you know I've never bought kale?! I'm not too sure what to do with it so I look forward to seeing your kale in action! :)

  15. I hope you aren't in any of the mudslide areas and can just enjoy the rain a little. The fruit and vegetables look so good, but I must say that the Indian foods would have drawn me in too! btw...thanks for tilting the dip so I could read all the ingredients from the lid! I think I could duplicate that first dip! Gotta go record those ingredients! lol
