Tomatoes, I Miss You!

I normally try not to buy out-of-season produce, but I couldn’t resist getting two tomatoes when I was at the grocery store over the weekend.

The tomatoes tasted okay but definitely nothing like the sun-ripened, freshly picked summer tomatoes. They are just a distant memory right now… And I think I’ll wait (for the most part) until summer to eat them and then practically live on tomatoes…

Question: Is there any fruit or vegetable you sometimes “have” to get when it’s out of season?

Be well,
Andrea

  1. Yes! Blueberries and strawberries! Thankfully, they have been pretty available lately.

  2. Typically there is not a vegetable that I have to have when it is out of season, only baby lettuce. Since the growing season is shorter here in the north east, lettuce is typically shipped from California. So that's my one have to have out of season veggie.

  3. I try not to eat too many berries, unless I've bought them frozen, over the winter but miss them so much! :)

  4. Blueberries and strawberries, for sure! I buy them frozen so they still taste delicious. I prefer them frozen actually, because my IBS acts up with fresh blueberries especially. Also, oranges and squash!

  5. tomatoes here too. We really like them on our homemade pizza, and although they don't taste fabulous, they look good!

  7. I'd have to say strawberries. Buying them in the winter is nothing compared to picking them fresh in the summer, but sometimes I just can't resist!

  8. Is that tomato and avocado?? Drool.

You would absolutely hate the tomatos we get around here. But we eat them anyway because what are you going to do when you live in the great white north.

To be truthful, something being "in season" doesn't even register with me. Except if it's something that shows up once a year. Like Honeycrisp apples. They're amazing and only available in the fall for some reason.

  9. I love tomatoes and avocado. I don't know where's I'd be without the two. Definitely any berry would be one. I still love them even when they aren't in season.

  11. Asparagus! Luckily Trader Joes has a decent frozen variety. I just can't live without out it.

P.S. I just found your blog and love it.

  12. I am an apple junkie! We go apple picking every year and I get a HUGE bag of crisp, fresh apples then, but I usually get them year-round in the store. I've become an expert at squeezing the apples just so in order to determine whether they are mushy and grainy. If I can't find any that feel crisp, I won't buy them, but I'll miss them.
