Project Pizza

Thanks for all your suggestions to make my own pizza in yesterday's comments. Yes, I have thought about making my own pizza (and I used to buy pizza dough and use that to make pizza a loooong time ago). Honestly, I am not the biggest pizza fan in the world, so I guess that's why I haven't made my own pizza in a long time... But looking at the toddler enjoying his pizza sooo much, I think it's about time I make my own pizza, dough and all!

So, in the next few days, I'll try to figure out how to make a healthy pizza dough. In the meantime, I want to get some ideas for interesting pizza toppings. I'm not a big fan of tomato sauce on pizza, so I'm looking for alternatives. Here is what I have come up with so far:
  • pesto topped with tomato slices, garlic & basil
  • mozzarella, tomatoes & basil - Do I need to put any sauce underneath?
  • thin layer of cheese, grilled chicken & caramelized onions
  • thin layer of tomato sauce, sauteed onions, mushrooms & garlic
Questions: Any thoughts as to whether my toppings will work? What should I add/omit? What are your favorite pizza toppings?

Be well,

  1. i am pretty sure those ALL sound fabulous - my vote goes for the mozz, tomato and basil. just can't go wrong with that combo. i wouldn't put sauce under it - just maybe some EVOO and garlic. yummmm!

  2. Yum! I've made a few different kinds of DIY pizza and my favorites are:

margarita: olive oil, tomatoes, spinach, basil, feta with a thin layer of red sauce

sausage: chicken sausage, roasted red pepper, garlic, mushrooms with red sauce

plain jane: olive oil, turkey pepperoni, feta, mozzarella, basil

chicken pesto: chicken cooked in Italian seasoning, pesto sauce, basiland 3 fat-free cheeses: mozzarella, feta & parmesan!

Hope this helps!! I LOVE DIY pizza! (the recipes as far as ammounts are on my blog if that makes it easier). :)

  3. If your toddler would eat that pizza, that's excellent. I just know that pesto, garlic, basil, are all acquired tastes, BUT it's good to introduce your children to those types of foods at a young age so they can expand their palate! I think it sounds great. I love mushrooms, olives, and tomatoes on my pizza, those are my must-have toppings!

Sometimes as an alternative to red sauce I use homemade italian dressing to make a "white" pizza. It's made with canola oil and just a couple table spoons is enough to cover a whole pizza.

Here's the pizza dough recipe I use that turns out great every time! I swear it's not nearly as daunting as I expected it to be when I first started out.

One of my favorites is basil pesto, topped with thinly sliced tomatoes, spinach, fresh basil leaves, and feta cheese...yum!

  6. I love the pesto idea. That sounds like it would be delicious!

  7. All sound great! I love the pesto, tomato + garlic. One of my favorites is pesto, tomato, zucchini & kalamata olives.

Favorite topping: butternut squash/pumpkin puree, bacon or ham or prosciutto or andouille, goat cheese, arugula, parmesan. MMMM!!

  9. my fave non-sauce pizzas are a white clam and garlic one, and a caramelized onion...

  10. OH BOY

Pizza is a staple in our house...healthy or not!
the boys love bbq sauce w chicken and red onions...cheese of course
I personally ADORE pesto... cream sauce, I used artichoke hummus, Olive tapenade makes a GREAT base too...

Pizza is a great way to use up "stuff" in the fridge too...
good luck and can't wait to see what you make!

  11. All of your combos sound so good! Whenever I've had Margherita style (my fave esp. on a thin, wood-fired crust), I don't think there was a sauce below. You can always mush the tomatoes up a bit w/ EVOO and garlic?

ALL of those toppings sound wonderful!
