How To Grow Basil

I've been getting some emails regarding how to grow basil. Basically, I do three things to grow basil successfully:
  1. Put the plant in a place where it gets plenty of light.
  2. Water regularly (up to daily when it's hot in the summer).
  3. Pick the bigger leaves on a regularly basis so that new leaves can grow.
If you want to see me and my basil plant up close and personal, here is a short video:

If you have any basil comments or questions, just leave them below.

Be well,

  1. Wow, great timing on this! I have a plot in the garden that I've set aside for growing veggies and of course basil is on the list- I don't think that we have tooooo many squirrels, but we do have them. Hmm. I guess it will be trial and error! I really need to get advice from the local nursery about other veggies and herbs.

Thanks for the tips- I didn't know any of them- very helpful!

  2. I'm pretty sure I am growing basil this year, but not indoors. Is it more difficult to grow outdoors? I didn't know to keep clipping the bigger leaves so the others could grow...good tip Andrea!

  3. Thank you! I have some sweet basil in a pot I just bought from the nursey - wasn't sure what to do with it! It's been sitting on the porch for awhile waiting.

  4. Great tips - I follow the first two with out basil, but not so much #3 because I don't keep track of the basil growth that well (I know, bad!). I don't grow our basil outside, not because of squirrels, but because I'm too lazy to go outside and pick it! I'm showing how lazy I am in the kitchen, hehe :P

    Happy Mother's Day, Andrea!!!!!

  5. What great tips! I love growing basil but I always seem to kill it. I am going to try it again.
    Happy Mother's Day!

  6. good gosh you are the mom I pretend I am in my head.

  7. I don't think my apartment has enough light to grow basil even though we get sunlight, maybe not enough. A definite NYC drawback.

  8. love this andrea! how fun and great tips :)

  9. Basil is so pricey to purchase.. I should grow my own. I am sure I could do it without killing it!

  10. Andrea, I have to say, this video made my day. It absolutely thrilled me to "see you in person". You have been such a constant source of good vibes and support for me, I don't feel worthy sometimes. You're a real gem to me.

And now I might even be able to keep a basil plant alive, something I have never been able to do before. :)

    You're the best!

  11. So timely, just got another basil plant - I love basil but seem to have a black thumb as far as they're concerned which is frustrating as my mother can grow them into shrubs.

  12. I have a black thumb. I just killed three herb plants within a week of buying them from TJs. :-(
