Tommy Bahama Maxi Dress

On our way to Lake Tahoe, we like to stop at the Vacaville Outlets as it breaks the trip in half. So over the years it has become a tradition. When the kid was younger, it was also a great place for him to run back and forth on the sidewalks to expend some energy. Seems so long ago but brings back wonderful memories…

At the outlet, I always love to check out the Tommy Bahama Outlet store, but, contrary to Andy’s claims, I don’t always buy something there. In fact, in all of the years checking out the store, I have only bought three items: a bathing suit, my “oceany” maxi dress and this interesting striped maxi dress. I got a great deal on the dress; I believe the original price was $168, and I got it for $39. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have already seen the dress in one of my Instagram stories as well as in my feed.

I love that the stripes are arranged in interesting angles. Plus, it’ll be fun to change the look with different colored accessories. I’m already thinking of different ways of transitioning the dress into fall.

Bourbon Steak

I wore the dress to an early birthday dinner/date night with Andy. It had been months since we went on a date night, and it was nice to go out by ourselves (even though I love to spend every second with the kid as he is growing up WAY too fast… I can't believe my "baby" is in 4th Grade, and my other "baby" recently turned 25...).

We went to Bourbon Steak & Pub at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

Bourbon Steak is a Michael Mina restaurant with very good food and an upscale yet relaxed atmosphere. There is a more casual pub as well as an upscale steak restaurant. We attended a beer dinner in a spacious area on the lower level that is reserved for special events. Here is some of the food we enjoyed. Again, you may have already seen it in my Instastory.

How to Style a Maxi Dress Into Fall

I kept the look black & white but thought it would be fun to wear my newish red flats. It was super windy when we took the photos, and I definitely needed the light cardigan. The weather is starting to transition into fall around here in the early morning and evening; I know it’ll stay quite warm - or even hot - in the middle of the day for many more weeks. The maxi dress will work well into fall by adding a warmer cardigan or a jean jacket, a scarf on chilly days, and by switching out the flats for boots.

Mango Red Pointed Toe Flats
Outfit details: Tommy Bahama dress (outlet), Mango Pointed Toe flats, black cardigan (I like this one from Eileen Fisher), Rebecca Minkoff Dog Clip Saddle Bag, black and white necklace (I like this fun black and white necklace)

Here are some Tommy Bahama dresses that I love:

Questions: Do you like maxi dresses? Do you wear them only in summer, or also in other seasons? If so, how do you transition your maxi dresses (and/or skirts) into fall?

  2. I really like how the stripes aren't just horizontal or vertical on this dress and I love red with b/w! The photos of the food looks SO good. I always have to take photos of our food when we go somewhere nice. :)

    1. Thanks, Carrie! The "unusual" stripes are what attracted me to the dress! :-) And, yes, it's rare that we go out for a fancy meal, so it always gets photographed... :-)

I now desided I really want a saddle bag, although I always wear the same bag for my oxygen thing,I like them way to much. And the red shoes are a nice pop of color to ad. I hope you have a lot of fun wearing the dress, I think you will.

  10. Great choice on the dress. I agree, the placement of the line pattern creates some wonderful texture for the eyes. I love that you paired it with red.

Thanks for the comment about the video. I've been so very scared to do any videos but thanks to my friend's genius editing abilities I was happy how it turned out and may even consider doing more in the future : )

    1. Thanks, Jessie! I actually had a plan to get another maxi dress for a while and was holding out for the "perfect" one. This one spoke to me because of the colors (always love black and white) and the unusual stripes/lines.

It's crazy how fast they grow up! Sounds like you are enjoying the first year with your baby! Can't believe he is already 9 months?!!!

You know I love maxi skirts and dresses, and I wear them year round. We don't get snow though here in Brisbane.

  17. Fab dress, great styling, and those red shoes are just the perfect ploy to keep the outfit on track. They look so comfortable too Andrea. The maxi dress really elongates you - how tall are you, if you don't mind me asking? I recently had a meet up with another blogger and was sure she would have been the same height as me but was much taller. Am trying to get a handle on those bloggers I follow now x

  26. Andrea, I love this look! First, black and white with a pop of red is one of my favorite combos ever. Second, I always like an extra layer over a maxi dress. For me, maxi dresses are always a little snug in my tummy area so I like a little coverage there and a flowy cardigan is perfect for that. Really amazing look! And that food looks delicious. My mouth is watering now (and it's dinner time, so I need to start thinking about what to make!)

They are the perfect color of red, they are great pop to the outfit. And you standing in front of that background, it's perfect. What a great date night outfit. Casual enough to be comfortable but dressy enough that you look fantastic.

  33. Not only is it beautiful but it is also extremely versatile. You can wear any color accessories at all and it will match. I love the stripes that go every which way, they add loads of interest to the dress. Another winner Andrea. Btw, I cannot believe you have a child who is 25! You look way too young for that.
