Bright Blue Pants

Several years ago I bought a pair of bright blue (and also a pair of bright red) corduroys at the end of the season. I believe they were about 80% off. I really liked the bright pants but wasn’t sure how much I would actually wear them. But at 80% off I thought I could risk it. And I’m very glad I got the pants as they add interest to my mainly neutral wardrobe. I know I’ll keep them for years to come even though I may not wear them all that much each season.

On the day I wore them, we thankfully got a bit of rain in the San Francisco Bay Area. I let the pants be the focal point of the outfit by wearing a black tunic with the bright pants. I also wore black flats and carried my black Rebecca Minkoff Dog Clip Saddle Bag. While it was raining, I carried my red umbrella which added an extra pop of color.

After we got some fresh air in the mild rain, Andy, the kid and I went to The Yard House in Santana Row. We hadn’t been in years and were very pleasantly surprised by the food and the service. It was the kid’s and Andy’s last celebratory meal for their birthday week! You can see in the photo how tired the kid was after all the celebrating...

  1. I remember wondering if I should buy some red jeans about 4 years ago, and a patient told me that of course I should! Ever since then, I love my "loud" pants---I also have a couple print ones that I consider somewhat vocal (haha)!
I think they are super fun!!
And you're right---that's a perfect way to try them out when they are 80% off!!
    You look fantastic Andrea!

    1. Thanks, Jodie! Loud pants are fun! :-) I clearly don't wear them as much as my more muted pants, but I reach for them more often than I thought I would! They really brighten up the day!

  2. First of all your pants are great! I don't see the red in them but the umbrella is certainly providing that beautiful combination!
I don't think the pants are loud at all. The fact that they're blue puts them only a tiny notch beyond jeans! Color is certainly something we react to in a variety of ways. I believe most of those "ways" are positive So... I encourage you to continue to stretch your color legs beyond the mere pants and umbrella. I'd call it healthy experiment in self expression and emotional "fashion growth" ?

    1. Thanks, Marilee! Sorry for not being very clear, but I bought a pair of bright blue pants (the ones in this post) and another pair of red pants (they are the same pants in different colors).

And you are so right about color. It does affect us a lot. I've actually been more drawn to color lately; it'll be interesting to see where my color journey will take me...

We celebrated their birthdays A LOT - with a few dinners with friends and family, a low-key party at our house and a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood! I don't think they can complain... ;-)

  6. So I am not the one who celebrate the birthday during the whole week! Best wishes !!

Buying in the sales at the end of the season can be risky or a turn out to be a fantastic opportunity to buy unaffordable items ... your trousers are a good pick!! They will work well with many neutral colours...

    1. The boys were certainly celebrated a LOT! :-)

I'm very happy I picked up the pants. I don't think I would have paid full price because I just wasn't sure if I would wear them a lot. I'm actually feeling a need to add more color to my mostly neutral wardrobe, so I'm very glad I got them.

  7. I don't have any clothing nor pants with this colour. I always think its hard to pair with any other colour except white. But you proved it wrong. Enjoy the celebration week & have fun !

  8. I love the colour of your pants - definitely keepers! :) I have a few bright and printed statement jeans that are a nice change from the blue denim now and then. Although I might not wear them as much as I do the blue denim, like you I think they are worth keeping :)

    Hope you've had a great weekend :)

  12. Love the color combination Andrea. The pants look great with black. Of course I love your bag as well. My "loud" pants are a pair of pastel floral ones I have for spring.

  16. Those pants look fantastic on you, Andrea! I don't own any loud pants -- never been able to work up the courage to move beyond neutral colors. Any tips for getting over that hurdle?

    1. Thanks, Jessie!

My suggestion would be to pick a pair of "loud(er)" pants that you can see pairing with some of your neutral tops, shoes and accessories that you love wearing. Think greys, browns, beige, blues, etc. I wouldn't necessarily pick black as the contrast may be a bit too much at first. For example, the pair of pants I'm wearing could also be paired with different shades of blue and would probably look "less loud," if that makes sense. Today I'm wearing some pretty loud red pants, and I'm wearing a grey cardigan, which makes the pants look less loud than a black cardigan would. Also, I have seen some very cool patterned pants in grey tones; the colors are pretty muted, but the pants are still interesting. That may also be a step in a more adventurous direction. Hope this helps, and let me know if you ever do work up the courage! :-)

  18. I actually don't have any bright color pants but I do like these on you and how you styled it with all black, making the pant be the focal point. Great photos and I am glad you had a great time!

  22. Aww you and the kid ... so cuuuute! I have one pair of red pants. They only come out of the closet occassionally because with my pear shape, red on the bottom isn't the most flattering! You however have long lean legs and can totally pull it off!

  24. I love this color and it looks fantastic on you! I have shorter legs and they are more full than yours, so I tend to wear dark bottoms, trouser jeans or flare cut pants. Then I have to add a wedge heel! I would love to have a top or a wrap in this color though, it's so fun and vibrant!!!

  26. Haha, you gave me a good laugh there calling them loud pants. I used to have a ton of them when I was younger. In all sorts of colors. But now as I've gotten older I tend to go for neutrals more. But I like wearing loud sweaters. I have a bright red one that I love.
