Weekly Meals & Weekend Fun (November 16)

Our weekend was filled with lots of activity, but the highlight was Saturday evening. We went to the San Jose Bacon & Beer Classic, where Andy was a judge. He judged the IPAs as well as all the bacon dishes at the evening session.

It was cool to get to check out the San Jose Municipal Stadium when there wasn’t a game going on.

I didn’t have any beer but had a few sips of cider and mead as well as a few bacon samples. Here are some examples of the many bacon dishes.

Andy worked really hard taking copious notes and ranking the bacon dishes and the beers.

It was fun that we got to roam around on the field. We made sure to hunt down the San Jose Giants’ mascot, Gigante, and I made him take a photo with me.

Then the judges deliberated.

It was a fun - but quite cold - evening. We left a little before 10 p.m. and spent the next few hours trying to get warm.

Here are our meals for this week:

Meal 1: Whole Chicken in a Slow Cooker - I’m really curious to see how this turns out! This is a cool BuzzFeed recipe video - so fun to watch! On a side note, I am a wimp when it comes to whole raw chicken and already told Andy that he is in charge of cleaning and prepping the chicken and putting it into the slow cooker!
Meal 2: Vegetable bean soup.
Meal 3: Scallops with roasted vegetables.
Meal 4: Pizza with mushrooms & brie cheese and a salad.

Be well,

  1. First of all, I love your coat! Where is it from?

How did Andy become a bacon 'n' beer judge?? I think I need to find one of these competitions for Peter, haha :) How did he enjoy it? It sounds like you guys had a great weekend!

    1. Thanks, Jessie!

I got the coat about six or seven years ago in a small boutique. I believe it's an Italian brand. It was more expensive than what I normally pay for a coat, but I enjoy pulling it out every year, so I think it was a good investment.

Andy has been writing about the San Jose beer scene for about four or five years now, and someone recommended him to be a judge. It was a fun experience, but it was definitely work! Andy had about three hours to try all of the bacon dishes and the IPAs. With tasting everything and taking notes, there wasn't much time to socialize, etc. But he is glad he did it.

  2. Andrea, This looks like a lot of fun. Your coat is adorable! My husband would be in heaven doing that judging! Looks like some great menu ideas. I have to get better about planning a full week's menus. Thanks for the inspiration! Kim

    1. Thanks, Kim!

Andy had a great time tasting & judging, but I actually think he has had enough beer and bacon for a while. He asked for a salad for lunch today! :-)

  3. Looks like you had a fun night out even though it was work for Andy.

I am going to use the slowcooker next week for the second time, that will be the first time I won't be home using it and even though everyone says it's safe, it feels a bit scary to be away for 8 hours while there is food cooking in the house.

    1. Yes, it's strange when you first use the slow cooker. I made the chicken yesterday, and the recipe does not ask for any liquids to be added, just vegetables and the chicken. Andy kept on saying, "It's going to burn." Of course, it isn't, and in fact there was more than enough liquid/sauce when the chicken was done! :-)

  4. Wow... judging beer and bacon dishes would be my idea of a good time!

    1. Yes, I think Andy wasn't complaining! :-)

  5. An event with food is always a good idea!😋

  6. Sounds like a great evening! Judging IPAs and bacon dishes sounds like fun! Your coat is gorgeous!
