Great Food, A Bit Too Much Indulging, and Lots of Changes

We had a great summer and are very thankful for it. We got away a few times, had a much lighter teaching schedule, got to hang out with each other, and ate lots of great food. Probably a bit too much good food as hubby’s pants are REALLY tight. Okay, mine are a bit tight, too… :-)

Here are a few of the things we have been eating. A lot of the food shown was actually hubby’s food (no, I’m not defensive…). But, okay, I’ll admit it, I made sure to “taste” it all… :-)

After all the indulging, it’s time to “cut back” a bit. Here is my plan:
  • Make veggies and/or fruits the focus of EVERY meal
  • Don’t drink your calories – they add up so quickly
  • Eat at home – that’s where you are truly in control
  • Be focused when exercising (don’t just go through the motions)
  • Move throughout the day as much as possible (take the stairs, park further away, etc. – the little things really add up)
And there have been changes in our house. Last week, I dropped the teenager off at college. I can’t believe I have a child in college… It truly seems like yesterday that he was just a little toddler. I’m excited for him but also a bit worried… I’m sure he’ll have a great time (I just hope he’ll be able to balance studying and having fun…). AND, we got Cable T.V. back, after having been without it for over a year. I signed up for the cheapest option, which has a great introductory rate for the first six months. I’ve never had on demand t.v. and am a bit like a kid in a candy store right now… Yes, overindulging in t.v. isn’t good… I’m working on it!

Questions: What were the highlights of your summer? What do you do when you have overindulged a bit? Any tips? What are your favorite t.v. shows? Not that I should watch any more… :-)

  1. Sounds like you had a great summer. The teenager is going to do great at college. My highlights include spending a lot of time with my family and friends. I did overindulge quite a bit. I've been trying to eat extra veggies and drink tons of water. I have to admit I've been loving some trashy reality TV lately..Jersey Shore, Flipping Out, and The Rachel Zoe Project. Clearly I've been overindulging there as well. ;)

    Grey's Anatomy is my fave. :) So dramatic. Looks like some great eats.

  4. Talk about great food, those photos are amazing!

    It is hard to see your kids grow up and move out. Our daughter left this week to live in Spain for the next 10 months to attend the University there. I mixed emotions but mostly am just happy for her.

    When I have overindulged a bit I do the same as you. Start cooking more fruits and veggies also fish. Eat at home, stop snacking and cut back on carbs. Make sure I exercise and drinks lots of water.

    TV shows well lets see, Nurse Jackie, Mad Men Oprah and Dr Oz. Not much time for anything else with all the time that blogging takes up!

    Sounds like you had a wonderful summer with great food :) Congrats on your oldest being in college! As far as Cable TV - for me, there's only one show to watch Mad Men!

  6. Sounds like a great summer with lots of yummy eats! I'm not a huge TV person, but I do watch Top Chef on Bravo.

  7. End of summer/fall is a great time to make fruits and veggies the center of meals. They're so many great fresh produce options during these months. Like tree-picked apples, and pumpkin, and corn!

  8. I let moving in July become my excuse for eating out a LOT this summer, but am dedicated to saving money and calories in the coming months by cooking at home. I got food poisoning a couple of weeks ago and it occurred to me that out of the 4 times I have had food poisoning in my life, never has it been the result of something *I* made at home. I think there's a lesson for me to learn there.

    Congratulations on having a child in college! That is so exciting.

    We haven't had cable for a few years, but I used to enjoy most of the HGTV shows (I love decorating and landscaping stuff) and What Not to Wear on TLC.

  10. I'm glad you enjoyed your summer Andrea. We all have our times of over-indulgence, and it sounds like you have a good plan for getting back on track. I like the idea of making fruits and/or veggies the center of each meal/snack. I try really hard to do that myself.

    I'm still amazed that you went without cable for so long! Nick and I watch tv every night before bed, but we also talk a lot and play board games while doing so :) We're into the reality cooking shows; Top Chef, Master Chef, Hell's Kitchen, we love it all!

  11. After over-indulging we love to eat lots of fish and veggie based meals. I also try to cut down the desserts a bit for a week or so.

    Cable TV= Mad Men!!!

  13. There is a show on TBS called My Boys that I really like. It is a summer series. It is super funny.
    I am glad you enjoyed some good eats during summer. I mean, you have to indulge every once and a while!

  14. When I've overindulged, I skip lunch and have several ice-cream cones instead. They go down easy! Wish that was a joke.

    Congrats on being a college mommy! I'm sure your "little" boy will do just fine! I hope he really enjoys college!

    highlight of the summer is working a lot and meeting a lot of new friends Indulgence came along because I was eating out everyday at least 1 meal.. I am not afraid of eating out anymore, actually really like the experience of enjoy a good meal with friends. Now, I'm done with the internship I'm going back to my old routine.

  16. It seems like during the summer time I over indulge a bit too much too. All in good fun. We got rid of cable about 6 months ago and now only have Netflix which is awesome because we can watch a ton of movies and TV shows through my husband's x-box. I do miss all the on demand workouts though :(

  17. The highlight of my summer was my trip to Florida with hubby to celebrate our 20th anniversary!! I over indulged while there, but it was SO much fun!!

    I have two boys in college this year! Makes me feel so old. They are just going to the community college though, so they still live at home--gives me a little more time before they move out :)

  18. The pictures of your food always look so good! I just want to jump into the page and start eating. Summer was so different for us with my husband off with his knee for the past two months. We have had a lot of leisure time and have eaten lots of fruits and vegetables...especially the tomatoes we grow ourselves. We do exactly the same thing as you when we want to tighten up a little...we move away from breads and meats and rely on fruits and vegetables with a little low fat dairy like cottage cheese.

    My youngest daughter had her name on her bedroom door at home and when she left for college and closed the door behind her, I think I wept every time I walked by it! But it got better and I was so proud of how independent she became.

  19. Highlights of my summer was surprising my grandmother for her 80th birthday in Houston. It was such a great week!
    When I overindulge, I tend to drink more water the next day and eat at my lower calorie range... never below 1200!

    Since we got a recorder and I can record anything I've become a real serie junkie. My favorite is Grey's Anatomy.

    Besides that I watch Private Practice, Army Wives, Ugly Betty, Cougar Town, Desperate Housewives, The Mentalist, The Good Wife, 90210, Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries and The Tudors.

    Soon we will be able to see Glee and Modern family which I also want to watch.

  21. I'm glad you had a great summer! This summer I've indulged in many dinners out with friends. To end the summer, I'm going to NYC with a group of friends over Labor Day weekend!

    I always try to focus on moving thoughout the day. I'm not really the type of person that can sit still for too long!

    Aside from my reality TV addiction, I've been loving everything on the cooking channel!

  23. The highlight of my summer was traveling to Australia for the first time. I loved it. In fact, I fantasized about retiring there. I highly recommend it for anyone who has never been.

  24. The highlight of my summer was being in San Francisco, a city I miss so dearly that I'm returning in two weeks.
    I typically do not do anything following stretches of overindulgence. My diet is so focused on vegetables and lean meats that I don't fret too much.

  27. Yes, I aware of that too! My hubby doesn't like eating out at all. We love simple home cook meal. And it's much cheap & healthier.
