Simple, Fresh Salad and Some Awards

Yesterday’s dinner was a simple red leaf salad with sliced radishes and a maple mustard dressing that was inspired by Averie’s Maple Ginger Dijon Vinaigrette. I had seen the dressing several times over the past week on Averie’s blog and thought it sounded great. Unfortunately, I was in a real hurry when I was making the salad, and I didn’t have time to look it up. I used pretty much the same ingredients, but I think my proportions were quite different. It still tasted good, but I’ll follow Averie’s recipe next time...

Over the past few weeks, I have received several awards, and I have been really slow to post about them. But here we finally go.

Kelly from Fitting Back In, Meg from Be Fit Be Full, and Kasey from Fit for Wellness each awarded me the Beautiful Blogger Award.

beautifulbloggeraward (fittingbackin; be fit be full meg; Kasey )

Nicole from Prevention RD passed on the Happy 101 Award to me.

I am supposed to share 10 things that make me happy:
  1. My family;
  2. My friends;
  3. Playing in rain puddles;
  4. Seeing the toddler in his rain coat and rain boots;
  5. The toddler telling me that he loves me;
  6. The teenager telling me that he loves me;
  7. Hubby telling me that he loves me (there is no particular reason for this order!)
  8. Family dinners with good fresh food, laughter, and sharing of what happened during our day;
  9. Running into former students and them telling me that they still remember what I taught them years ago; and
  10. Nature hikes.
Finally, Kristi from Mother Rimmy’s Cooking Light Done Right awarded me with the Honest Scrap Award.

In honor of all these awards, I’m going to share ten things with you that you may not know about me.
  1. I was attacked by a dog when I was a toddler and am still working on getting over my fear of dogs. Once I get to know a dog, I’m okay. But I’m still often afraid of dogs I don’t know, although I’m getting better. Over the years, my fear has stopped me from going into stores, made me cross the street a ridiculous amount of times, etc.
  2. I used to love to swim far out into the ocean. However, after several shark attacks in the area, I realized that may not be the smartest thing to do…
  3. I can make myself fall asleep during scary movies. I even made myself fall asleep in the movie theater before!
  4. We canceled cable T.V. in June and moved the T.V. into a space where really only the toddler can watch his PBS shows.
  5. Living without a T.V. has been easier than I thought it would be, but I do miss watching my favorite shows at home: Mad Men, Food Network, and trashy shows on Bravo that served as guilty pleasures).
  6. I watch Food Network shows or trashy Bravo shows at the gym while doing my cardio; it’s a great motivator!
  7. I would love to live in San Diego.
  8. There have been times when blogging became too overwhelming for me, and I wanted to quit. But I realized that my blog truly enriches my life, and it’s all about finding balance…
  9. For many years, I used to be “over-punctual.” I would get everywhere at least 15 minutes early.
  10. When I was younger, I seriously disliked chocolate. Only in recent years have I started to enjoy chocolate.
Thank you Kelly, Meg, Kasey, Nicole, and Kristi for the awards. I truly appreciate receiving them, and I truly enjoy all of your blogs!

Whenever I get an award, I reflect upon how blogging has enriched my life because it makes me focus on some of the good things in my life. I truly enjoy everyone’s comments and e-mails. And I love reading your blogs and am learning so much. At the same time, as I mentioned above, blogging can get overwhelming if you let it take over your life. It’s good to remember that it’s all about balance… Okay, it’s time for all of you to share a bit about yourselves.

Questions: What makes YOU happy? What is one random fact we don’t know about YOU? And how do you achieve a life/blog balance?
Be well,

  1. Thanks for sharing about you!! Great to know!!!

  2. Anonymous1/24/2010

    congrats on the award!
    I share with you on 8 and 9. I can't believe that you can fall asleep with scary movies... i can't fall into sleep anywhere! :(
    what makes me happy? being with my family, watch a good movie, read a nice book, talk with a friend, go out for a run/walk, cook a good meal to my family.... have coffee first thing in the morning... etc.... it seems that I'm easy to please! ;)

  3. It's great to learn more about you! Hearing family members say I love you makes me very happy.

  4. That's a great thing to do when you get an award, Andrea. I like your thinking.

    My friend Michelle was really afraid of dogs in high school, when I met her. We were trick-or-treating (yeah, we went Freshman year, that's really pathetic) and she got attacked by a dog right in front of me! This was AFTER she was afraid of dogs, so imagine how much she hates them now...

    Didn't like chocolate as a kid?! That's one thing I've liked since I was in the womb, haha.

    Have a great night Andrea!

  5. Thanks for the shout outs about the dressing!!! I am so happy you tried it and sounds like you were pretty successful, even without measuring. :)

    "# I watch Food Network shows or trashy Bravo shows at the gym while doing my cardio; it’s a great motivator!
    # I would love to live in San Diego. "

    ME TOO. And the blogging /overwhelming but enriches life, me too.
    Todder/teen/hubby all telling you they love you...priceless :)

    What makes me happy, much of what makes you family, good food, 15 mins of Bravo tv, yoga, coffee & chocolate, veggies, a great CSA box.

  6. Thanks for sharing! My love of chocolate grew stronger as I got older too.

    I have cut back to posting 3 times per week instead of 5 times per week. While blogging is something I love and has definitely enriched my life, sometimes it can be overwhelming. I feel like I have a better life/blog balance since I cut back a bit.

  7. Congrats on the award! Yoga makes me happy and I blog when I have the time to do it. If I set up any expectations about blogging than I can write a really crappy post. I would rather write less posts with more passion than a lot of posts that I don't think through.

  8. Congrats on all awards. Right now everything makes me happy!

  9. Great to get to know you! As a non swimmer I am in awe that you used to swim far out into the ocean! With my busy schedule, bloging can sometimes be too much, but ultimately it keeps me grounded. I find doing my posts right after dinner to work best for me most times. Then I still have the whole evening to cuddle with the kids.

  10. Cool facts. It's interesting to hear random things about the bloggers that follow each other. And yes, blogging is definitely a balance...I've no longer chosen to read a bunch of random blogs but am just following a set core of cool writers!

  11. Congratulations on your wonderful awards! and I often too make recipes and don't have time to go back and re read them, so I wing it.

    sometimes it works and sometimes, it does NOT! haha

    blogging, has to be balanced because it can so consume us. I just do my best and if it doesn't happen, I can always post later.

  12. Anonymous1/25/2010

    Congrats on your awards and nice to learn more about you!

  13. Aw congrats on all your awards, you earned them!

    I'm glad you now like chocolate. We might not have been able to be friends otherwise ;) (tehe kidding).

  14. I got bit as a kid by a small dog, and I STILL haven't forgotten about it! I still won't pet a dog unless I know it won't bite me!

    Congrats on the awards too!!

  15. Congratulations on all those awards! You are 100% deserving. I love all the things that make you happy. :)

  16. Wow what wonderful awards, you deserve all of them! My family, friends and pets make me happy.

    Random fact about me... I was born in Holland and went back to live there for 2 1/2 years when I was 11.

    To balance life/blog I only dedicate certain times of the day to writing/reading blogs... well most days ;)

  17. i LOVE family dinnres! catching up, laughing eating, drinking...everything about it!! your salads look SO delicious!!!

  18. Absolutely :)

    Blog-life balance is tough -- I'm working on that one right now. :-/
