Black & White Outfit and Rothenburg

We came back from our Germany trip last week. The foundation of my travel wardrobe was black & white, and it worked out very well. Visiting Germany in July is always a bit unpredictable as the weather can range from cold and rainy to hot and humid - and we experienced it all! But the black and white pieces - with some blue and green accent colors - worked very well. If you want to see some of the outfits that I wore while we were gone, you can check out my Instagram account. I even purchased some additional black and white items while we were gone. I’ll show you what I bought over the next weeks. One item I added is a black & white bag with a photo of my hometown.

I’m usually not a big fan of “touristy items,” but I really liked the black & white bag. And I carried it right away with a black and white outfit. I like the way it looks, and it is very practical as it allows me to carry a lot.

I wore the black and white outfit when we visited an animal park as well as Rothenburg. Rothenburg is a very touristy place but quite charming nonetheless, and it’s definitely worth a short visit when you are nearby.

Outfit details: Black Athleta Pure Tank, white vest old (similar), capri jeans WHBM old (similar), black Gizeh Birkenstock sandals, fringe necklace Banana Republic old (I like this fringe necklace from WHBM).

Questions: What do you buy when you are on vacation? I’m not a big fan of purchasing traditional souvenirs, and the bag is an exception. I love buying scarves and jewelry however (they are light and small), and I added several pieces while on vacation… Ok, I also bought some shoes, a dress, a coat, a tunic, some tees… I love wearing items I bought while on vacation as they always bring me back to our vacation when I wear them...

Be well,
Andrea

  1. I love getting pieces of clothing while vacationing---because usually they provide a uniqueness!!
But it's also fun to have an item like your bag (because truthfully, I will forget where some of the "souvenirs" are from---ha ha)
    What a fun trip, Andrea!!

    1. Thanks, Jodie! Yes, I always try to go for the unique pieces I can't get here when I buy things on vacation. Our vacations are pretty predictable (= we go to the same three or four places again and again), so it's pretty easy for me to remember where I got what... Or I just remember it was on vacation (I hope) - that's really enough! :-)

  2. It looks like a city from a farytale book! Did you eat a lot of ,,torte,,? In Germany you can eat great cake and Pie s! I love to buy accesories on Holiday. I bought a beautiful brooche of a dragonfly last May in Hastings and I lost it! So now I am going to buy another one in August when we return.

    1. Yes, you are right Nancy; it almost looks fake! :-) I can't digest gluten (flour) properly, so I only took a bite here and there of the delicious desserts the boys were eating...

I hope you can replace the brooch! Have a wonderful vacation!

  3. Seeing your pics of Rothenburg made me so happy! I know it's rather touristy but I also find it quite charming and I love taking guests there. It's such a pleasant place to walk around for a day. As far as travel souvenirs, we try to always buy nice Christmas ornaments when we travel. They don't always have to say the name of the place either. We bought 3 beautiful handblown glass ornaments from the island of Murano near Venice and on this weekend's trip we bought a handmade paper ornament with a guy on a bike and the Danish flag to commemorate all of our bike riding around Copenhagen. Needless to say, we take a walk down memory lane every time we put up our Christmas tree. I do sometimes buy jewelry. A bracelet I bought at a Paris flea market last year for 20 Euro is one of my favorite pieces. I get tons of compliments and it brings back great memories. I can't wait to hear more about your Germany trip. It sounds like you had a great outfit base with the black and white theme.

    1. I have been thinking about buying Christmas ornaments on vacation for years and years but have never gone through with it for some reason! Partly because I feel we are so old... But that's a silly reason. It's never too late to start, right?

We had a nice trip. The main purpose was to spend time with my parents (but also give them breaks from us as they are in their 80s and both sick and my dad had a severe stroke last year). I feel we were able to achieve a nice balance.

  4. I love your photos from your trip! I lived in Germany for 3 years, your photos bring back so many great memories! When I travel, I like to buy a piece of jewelry or accessory (like a handbag or scarf) that I will wear for a long time and will always bring back memories of my trip. Looking forward to hearing more about your trip!

  7. Found your blog from the link up. Love your photos as it reminds me of our trip. We also just returned from Europe and spend 5 days in Munich! I bought myself a pair of Birkenstocks as a souvenir and we also went to the Ritter Sport Chocolate Factory and bought a lot of chocolate!! I wish I had a little more time to do some shopping, but maybe on the next trip!

    1. We also spent three days in and around Munich. Unfortunately, it was raining most of the time, but it was still fun.

Birkenstocks are so much cheaper in Europe - I've bought all my Birkenstocks there! And how fun that you visited the Ritter Sport Factory!?!!! Sounds wonderful!

  13. How smart to stick to a black and white color scheme for traveling, that's a good idea. I love the bag you bought too, what a great souvenir! I haven't been consistent in what I buy when traveling, but I like to get things that last, like jewelry or a book or something.

  14. i have always wanted to go to rothenburg...i thought we would have time this past trip but it would just be too much rushing. i think it's really important to "be" where you are on vacation, and get to know an area. next time, tho. your bag is a great reminder of your trip...but wasn't that where one of the attacks just was? i feel like it was a smaller city, on the train, where you wouldn't expect anything. i felt most of my unease in vienna when we were there in june, but not in the countryside/alps.

    1. Yes, it is really important not to do too much on trips and to have time to just be. Rothenburg and the surrounding area is beautiful (and the surrounding area is also a lot quieter, and therefore nice to hang out and recharge your batteries).

And, yes, unfortunately, the ax attack happened on a train that was heading to Würzburg main station. The attacker got off a few miles before (after an emergency stop). We were actually out walking at the time and less than 1/2 mile from where he was (attacking a pedestrian at the time). There was police action going on all night. The incident made us all very sad and served as a reminder that life can truly change at any moment...

  22. This looks positively charming! I love exposed beam and stone architecture. And while I love taking photographs of architecture and landscapes as travel souvenirs, I usually like to purchase something for myself too. Like you, I'm not big on traditional souvenirs. Still - I see the appeal of the tote you picked up! It's a good-looking and versatile bag that doesn't feel too kistchy or touristy, but it'll still remind you of your adventures every time you look at it!

  29. Hi Andrea!

  30. I love the bag, and the town looks so charming. I usually buy one t-shirt when I travel because I plan on making a t-shirt quilt someday of all our travels. And then I buy one thing that I think best represents our trip. For example when I was in Las Vegas last I stayed at the Pink Flamingo hotel so I purchased a blown glass pink flamingo.

I am a huge fan of a black wardrobe with bits of color or flash thrown in. A great scarf, piece of jewelry or shoe and bag. Perhaps that's why I love our choices so much. This bag has my name all over it! I would carry it everywhere. It's nice and big and so fun!
