Yellow Cardigan & Blue and White Striped Dress

I love yellow, but I don’t look very good wearing a lot of yellow, especially close to my face. I got my yellow cardigan about five years ago but haven’t worn it very often over the years. One way I enjoy wearing it is with my blue/white striped Lauren by Ralph Lauren midi dress.

How To Wear Yellow When You Are Pale

By adding a little more blue near my face with the mainly blue neck scarf, I think the yellow works. It may not be the most flattering color on me, but I love the bright yellow, and it always makes me happy! And I think sometimes it’s okay not to wear one of your best colors if an outfit makes you happy.

Yellow Cardigan 1

I decided to wear my brown sandals. The sandals have a pretty high (for me) heel, but the platform makes them very comfortable. These days, I rarely wear the same colored shoes and bag as matching shoes and bags is certainly out of fashion. But I really wanted to carry my new, brown Coach bag (bought at the Coach Outlet for 70% off).

Yellow Cardigan 2
I have been pretty obsessed with finding the “perfect” brown bag for at least six months, and I even have a Pinterest board devoted to finding one. The more I looked for the “perfect” brown bag, the more I realized that there isn’t a perfect one as there are so many different bags and occasions. While I would love a brown bag with beautiful soft, delicate leather, I know that for my current life that wouldn’t be very practical as I need a bag that’s durable and versatile.

Yellow Cardigan 4
Outfit Details: Dress: Lauren by Ralph Lauren (I love this Lauren polka dot midi dress), yellow Banana Republic cardigan (similar), Coach bag (I also love this one).

I really like the look of the brown Coach bag, and it’s a nice size - big enough to carry some things (I was able to stuff an amazing amount of items into it during a recent, unplanned emergency shopping trip where I had forgotten to bring bags), but not too big. Plus, it’s easy to care for and can be wiped down if need be. It’s perfect for everyday life right now and, in fact, many years to come.

Questions: Is there a color you like but you don’t look your best in? Do you wear it?  Do you like yellow? Do you ever wear it? If so, what yellow clothing items do you own?

Be well,
Andrea

I'm really happy with the brown bag; I think I got a bit too caught up in finding the "perfect" bag for a moment, but it all worked out in the end... :-)

  3. It's a good idea to wear some blue near the face with a yellow item.I will try if it works on me too! A brown bag is really essential since it goes with most outfits. You will use yours long!! I often buy in outlets ... why should I pay the full price is I can pay less???
    P.s.
You look very nice, yellow is ok on you!!

    1. Thanks, Dan! I think the blue near my face makes the yellow work, otherwise the overall look is too pale.

And, yes, a brown bag is essential, and I can't believe I've never owned one! And you are right, outlets are a great place to shop (if you only buy what you truly love. I used to get carried away by all the bargains, but if you don't end up wearing things, it's not so much a bargain...).

  10. I love the blue and white stripes with the pop of yellow! I have the same problem with yellow. I love yellow and orange. They make me smile, but if I wear them close to my face, I appear to have developed jaundice! So I either choose pieces in these colors that don't go near my face...bottoms or accessories. Or...if the yellow or orange have bluish undertones (like a mustard or pumpkin color),then I can wear them near my face! Probably still not the best color for my complexion, but I love them and they make me happy, so I will wear them when the mood strikes!

I think it's nice to wear things that make us happy - no matter if we should or "shouldn't" wear them. It's more important to feel good than to look good!

I've found that I have to experiment with yellow. It really depends on the shade, and I feel I have to have a darker color close to my face. The little scarf was part of a multi pack, and I love it (even though I had bought the pack because of some of the other scarves in it...).

      Thanks for your link up!

  27. Agree, yellow is tricky on pale skins - I have the same problem! I simply can't wear lemon toned yellows. They end up making me look ill! Soft buttery yellows are much better and fine teamed with other colours. Great trick about diffusing the yellow with the scarf.

  28. Love the outfit and finding the perfect purse is a good feeling. There are so many variations of yellow, some that are pretty nasty if you ask me. I do have a few carefully selected yellow pieces in my wardrobe, even a pair of pale yellow open-toe patent-leather pumps that I love to wear in the spring and summer. Thank you for posting with my Up, Down, All-Around link-up.

  29. LOL! We're the exact opposite, Andrea...yellow is one of my colors, and I wear it a lot (along with orange and red). However, blue is my favorite color and definitely NOT my color, but I wear it to death. LOL! I love this tip, though, and will have to employ it. Thank you so much for sharing with #UpsyDaisyLinkup!

  30. Yes, yes, yes to all of your questions. When I was younger...much...my mom commented that yellow tends to make me look green, as in sea sick. That was enough for me. I never wore yellow. But this spring, you are old news if you don't have something in yellow! How inspirational to put the blue of the scarf nearer your face. Great idea. And I am thrilled that I can replicate the yellow cardi and blue and white striped dress. I am thinking church on Saturday night.

  33. Andrea this is a beautiful Spring or even Summer outfit. I have always loved the combination of yellow and blue and you have really pulled it together with the scarf. As for that gorgeous bag, well as long as it's strudy that is the most important. One of my girls is very, very pale and she loves blue but bright blue, not the one you are wearing. It looks awful on her, making her look like she is even paler than she is (and not in a good way). I have been suggesting peaches and pinks to make her face look less washed out, and she uses the blue as an accent color. I g uess there are always ways to go around this dilemma.

    1. Yes, it's really important to find the right shades of colors that work for each one of us. It's amazing how the same color can make someone look amazing and the next person totally washed out... A friend of mine wore a bright yellow turtleneck yesterday with a colorful scarf and looked fantastic. I know the combo would have not worked on me...

  34. Hey, I am back. Just wanted to update you. I wore my striped dress and yellow cardi yesterday to church, dinner and shopping. Loved wearing it and my Prince Charming liked it, too. Then while we were shopping for a wheel barrow at Lowe's, two very put-together women about my age stopped me to say I was one hot mama!!! Wow! A little later, I ran into an old friend at Walmart and she commented on how great I looked. I was on Cloud 9! Do you think I can get away with wearing this every week? XO
