Trina Turk Accomplice Top

Surprised by the Trina Turk Accomplice Top

During the blogger meet up at the Trina Turk Boutique in Burlingame a few weeks ago, I ended up picking up the Trina Turk Accomplice Top. To be honest, the top did not look like much on the hanger, and I probably wouldn’t have tried it on if the lovely salesperson Betsy didn’t suggest it.

I loved the top the minute I put it on. It is very comfortable, and I love the fit. It’s roomy but not boxy, which I had feared it would be from just looking at it on the hanger. I guess I am used to tunic-length tops, and a shorter top looked very different. But instead of being boxy, the top drapes nicely.

Comfortable Yet Put-Together Outfit

I paired the top with comfortable, ancient, roomy jeans and a basic black blazer from Zara and loved how effortlessly the outfit came together. I actually wasn’t feeling very well on the day I was wearing this outfit, and I was very comfortable yet presentable.

I guess the lesson learned here is that you can’t judge a garment from what it looks like on the hanger. I probably should try on a lot more clothes! Also, a good salesperson can really steer you in the right direction. Thanks, Betsy and Trina Turk Burlingame for helping me find a great addition to my wardrobe!

I know that I’ll get lots and lots of wear out of this top and am already planning several outfits that include the top.

Questions: Do you go by what clothes look like on the hanger? I have to admit that I usually judge clothes by what they look like on the hanger. This experience taught me that I should try on a lot more things! Do you try on many options? I don’t. I should change that, too…

  1. My mother was my fashion expert growing up, and I still rely on advice she gave me growing up in my choices as an adult. The one thing that took the longest for me to accept that was the absolute truth was to never judge anything on a hanger and try everything on. It's hard to believe there can be such a difference between a garment hanging or you holding it up...but there is. I'm glad you've joined the club, Andrea! Here's one of the benefits...when you find something in the mall that there are a hundred of that look like crud on the hanger, there will only be three people who buy it because they will know to try it on. LOL! You look fabulous in that outfit and top. I just love Trina Turk.

    1. Yeah for a mom with great fashion advice! It's funny that it took me 40+ years to fully realize this fact... Trina Turk's collection is fabulous! Something else that hadn't been on my radar...

  2. You definitely can't tell you weren't feeling well in that picture (although, aww! Hope you felt better soon!). I definitely judge clothes by how they look on the hanger, and my choices tend to be safe (i.e. boring). I've learned a lot from your posts, through! Now I need to experiment with being more adventurous :)

    1. Thanks, Jessie! I'm feeling a lot better and having comfortable yet put-together clothes was great!

And as far as fashion goes, I'm becoming a lot more adventurous myself! It's really all about having some fun! Life is too short not to! :-) But when you have your hands full with a little one like you do, it's perfectly fine to reach for the tried-and-true for a while... :-)

  4. I love when something doesn't look like much on the hanger and then looks great on and I also love it when a friend or salesperson persuades me to try something on that I'm not initially crazy about it. The top fits you really well and I think you'll get a ton of wear out of it.

As far as trying this on, when I go to a tall shop, I will literally spend 2 hours trying stuff on. It's so fun. Otherwise, I normally order clothing online since I need tall sizes. When I lived in the States, I would order 2 sizes of everything from the tall lines of places like Ann Taylor, BR, J.Crew etc., try everything on at home and take the sizes that didn't fit back to the stores. I guess you could say I was kind of creating a "dressing room" at home since these companies refuse to carry tall sizes in the stores :)

And I know your plight about not being able to buy tall sizes in stores... I also order all my pants (and most tops) in tall sizes online and it can be tricky... I'm glad you found some great tall shops!

  6. Over the last few years I've stopped judging clothes from the hanger, because I've picked up a few items, tried them on and been really pleasantly surprised. It always amazes me how different they can look on the body!
I think you look great - quite a classic look which always works well. The photos are lovely too. I especially like the ones of you in the hotel hallway (I presume it's a hotel lol!)

The photos are actually taken in an outdoor passageway (between two buildings) that connects two streets. I love the cool colors!

  17. I love how that outfit looks - you could totally dress it up or down - love it paired with the jeans! I always have to try stuff on because I am short - only 5.2" so either tops are too long, most pants if not petite are too long, etc. But obviously, you don't have that problem! :D

    1. Thanks, Biz!

Well, I actually can't usually buy pants in stores as they are almost always too short (since most stores don't carry tall sizes in their stores!). And ordering online is a pain as even if you know your size in a particular store, it still sometimes doesn't work out... Plus, I HATE to return things... :-)

  19. We really do have a lot in common. I always judge an item by how it looks on the hanger, and you're right, I shouldn't. I also agree, a good sales person can make an outfit come to life. Do you find these kind of sales associates are getting more difficult to come by? I do. Great choice with that Trina Turk top, you're right, it lays so nicely, I truly love the length.

  21. I absolutely go by how clothes look on the hanger and/or mannequin. But I know that is like judging a book by its cover. There has to be a little something I like before I will open the book or try on the clothing. You wore this top perfectly. Love the necklace with it. And your 'do is so chic! A+, girlfriend. Back in the days when I had more tine for shopping I'd pick up anything that looked interesting ad try it on to see. Now I tend to only visit stores when I already had something in mind to try on, and rarely branch out.

  26. What a great look on you - and I love your new top! As far as judging times by how they look on the hanger, I don't. I look for items that catch my eye by color and pattern first - then I check out the piece. If it is unique and interesting, I usually will give it a try. I am also a big fan of altering a garment to get the perfect fit which may be why I always try things on - I know if I love it, it can be tailored in most cases. You look great! Have a fantastic weekend!
