Veggies, Meals & Workouts

Bike riding, running, climbing, and soccer are some of the kid’s current favorite activities. It keeps us all very active, which is a good thing!

We got another CSA box. Over the years, I have learned that it’s best to eat the lettuce right away as it quickly wilts, so we had a nice, simple salad with radishes on Friday night. We really enjoyed it.

Now on to this week’s meals:

Meal 1: Chicken cilantro dumplings – some pan fried, some in a veggie broth; steamed veggies
Meal 2: Veggie stir fry with mushrooms over brown rice – I’m really looking forward to using the mushrooms from the CSA box
Meal 3: Mushroom ravioli with pesto and veggies
Meal 4: Grilled salmon with lemon dill sauce and smashed cauliflower
Meal 5: Butternut squash soup, leftovers and other refrigerator finds

My workouts didn’t go at all as planned. I came down with a bad cold and just couldn’t exercise at all on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday I thought I’d give a short workout a try and did 20 minutes on the elliptical. Afterwards, I went into the steam room (which was challenging as I couldn’t really breathe, but I felt better afterwards). Thursday and Friday I rested more. Finally, on Saturday I felt well enough to go to a barre class. In the past, I never took a break from working out even when I was sick, and there were stretches when I was always sick. Looking back, I think it was because I didn’t allow my body to heal properly. Glad I’m older and bit wiser… Winking smile

Here are my workout plans for this week:
  • 2 barre workouts (I got a couple of questions about barre workouts. I wrote a post about barre workouts last year, but in short barre workouts are a mixture of ballet, yoga, and Pilates; there is lots of thigh work, core work, and push ups; light weights with high repetitions are also used – much harder than it sounds)
  • 1 weights workout
  • HIIT
  • Short workout DVDs (The 30 Day Shred, etc.), which I will do before work – I really miss Exercise t.v. on demand (which apparently shut down its on demand channels as well as its website on December 31.) We just got cable t.v. again recently, and Exercise t.v. was one of the things I really liked about it. I know many people like www.bodyrock.tv, and I’ll have to give the site a try soon.
Questions: Do you have any suggestions for online exercise sites? If so, please share in the comments! What workouts do you have planned for this week? What’s on your menu?

Be well,
Andrea

  1. Exercise tv was the one thing I knew I was going to miss (okay along with the food network) when we got rid of cable 2 ish years ago. So sad that exercise tv is gone now! When i wasn't teaching as much (or pregnant) I did a lotta bodyrock workouts. They're quick effective and high intensity workouts. I look forward to doing them again after the baby is here!

Hope you have a great rest of your weekend as get all your workouts in as planned. :)

  4. Sorry to hear you got sick-no fun, but I agree it's definitely wise to take a break when you are sick. Chicken and cilantro dumplings sound really yummy-do you have a recipe? Never heard of Body Rock tv but sounds interesting so I'll have to check it out. Have a great week!

  5. I'm having my butt kicked by a cold right now too. Laying low for sure. Part of my food plan this week includes tofu tacos. Last night we had salmon with sauteed kale. We only just recently started eating kale and it is quickly becoming a fave in our kitchen.

    1. We love kale but haven't had it in a while. It usually shows up in our CSA box by this time, but it hasn't yet... Get well soon!

There is an online yoga workout that I love called yoga download. You can download the workout to your iPod or iPhone.

  9. Thanks for the links about your barre workouts. I do think I remember those, now that you mention it, but I will check them out again. It really sounds like a workout I would enjoy.

    The mushroom ravioli sounds intriguing!
Oh, and guess what? I just found out that the house about 10 houses down from us is a CSA pick-up. I think we're joining one this year! I'm excited about it.

    1. I really like my barre workouts, and they have helped tremendously with my low back pain. If I do them regularly (at least 2x per week), my back pain is gone. Considering that I "got stuck" in places last year because I couldn't move because of my low back pain, that's pretty remarkable.

I bet you'll enjoy the CSA. I love being surprised and experimenting with new (to me) veggies and fruits.

  10. No tips for the TV exercises as you would expect. But as you know I bought a lot of DVD's which aren't too expensive to buy either.

Meals for this week look good Andrea.

  12. Heh, I need to get more like you with planning. It would probably save time!

When I can't get to my Crossfit gym, I usually just skim through their week of workouts and pick one I can do with the equipment I have. It's www.dogtowncrossfit.com. They rock!

  13. Interesting Andrea! I was wondering how the Barre workout was. It looks fun and appealing, but I wasn't sure if it was effective. Hmm not sure if you like to do "manly" workouts! haha! But I think this guy on youtube called mike chang has some great stuff as well.

  14. Chicken cilantro dumplings sound fabulous! Your menu sounds amazing and the CSA box looks great! I have been buying a lot of citrus at the Farmers market. For exercise we have been doing a lot of walking and hiking. Soup will be on the menu this week and tonight I made spaghetti with a meat sauce. I will be cooking with what we have on hand since there wasn't a lot of cooking on the weekend and I have fresh produce to use up.

I don't use tv or on line videos for exercise so I am of no help for you on that.

  15. I so miss my CSA. The company that serves this community during the winter is expensive, and the produce is often less than fresh. You are so fortunate!
