Breakfast Journey Down Memory Lane

I’m boring when it comes to breakfast. Most days I eat oatmeal with walnuts or almonds. But since my mom has been visiting, I’ve made some more “interesting” breakfasts. We have had veggie/egg scrambles, spicy sesame rice with poached eggs, fruit with yogurt sauce and whole wheat pancakes, and bagels with cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomatoes, red onions, and capers.

The bagels were huge, and half a bagel was more than enough per person…

I introduced the teenager to smoked salmon when he was a toddler, and he loved it immediately, and we had bagels and smoked salmon on special occasions for breakfast when he was little. I remember attending a wedding with him when he was about 5 and everyone marveling at the amounts of smoked salmon he was eating and how much he loved it… I rarely buy bagels and smoked salmon anymore, so the teenager was thrilled when he got to enjoy one of his childhood special occasion breakfasts. I love how food brings back memories…

Questions: What is your favorite breakfast from your childhood? What memories does it bring back? Do you sometimes still eat your favorite childhood breakfast?

Be well,
Andrea

  1. I love smoked salmon w/ cream cheese & capers. Just had some the other day in fact!
My favorite breakfast from childhood was...gulp...a bowl of fruity pebbles. We didn't eat sugar cereals every day, but when I was allowed to I loved it! I was a pikcy eater when I was young...no eggs, pancakes, or waffles or anything.

  2. This is so funny--just last weekend when my 5 y/o nephew came to visit, he was going on and on about smoked salmon. My sister had packed some in the car for a picnic, and he woke up in our house saying, "My stomach is grumbling. It's saying it wants smoked salmon." LOL. Cracks me up that at such a young age, they can love something so strongly flavored, especially in the morning!

Sounds like you're having a great time with your mom! :)

  3. Once in a while I'll have myself a bagel with some "shmeer". I wasn't always big on breakfast growing up. I don't know why. But once ina while I'd have a bowl of cereal or do it the Filipino way by having some garlic fried rice. i still do both once in a while. Now a days it's usually just a piece of toast and butter.

  4. Food DOES bring back memories! I think it's adorable when children have sophisticated taste!! My mom always made potato and egg tacos - I LOVE them and think about her whenever I make them (although I don't "fry" anything anymore!).

  5. My Mom always made me soft boiled eggs with toast "soliders" for dipping. I think I liked it so much because it was almost like playing with my food. I still eat it these days if I'm not feeling 100%. I guess it's turned into comfort food for me.

  7. Bagels and cream cheese always remind me of my family. The breakfast that takes me right back to childhood is my dad's homemade baked rice pudding... I can still envision the taste and smell :)

  9. This would be one of my favorites too. My childhood favorites tend to be funny enough green vegetables such as broccoli.

  10. I loved smoke salmon when I was a kid too! And my mom's goddaughter, since she was like 3 years old, has been NUTSO for GOAT CHEESE. So sophisticated!
Quite honestly, though, when I was a kid I could've eaten spaghetti with butter and cheese for every meal. And been completely content.

  12. Probably an omelet. My Dad would make them for us on weekends. And it was one of the first things I learned to cook as a kid. Still love omelets, because they are so versatile, and because they make me think of my Dad.

  16. My favorite breakfast growing up was "supereggs" It was a combo of potatoes, bacon, ham, eggs, mushrooms, onions and cheese. These days I still enjoy supereggs but I make them healthier by using egg whites, only a bit of grated Parm, no bacon, no ham and a ton more veggies.

  18. We absolutely love bagels for breakfast, usually we have them on Sundays :) And pastries, usually croissants in Wegmans on Saturdays. Growing up, my favorite breakfast was my dad's fluffy omelette!

  19. Lox & bagels, every Sunday.

That sesame bagel has my name on it.
I wish they weren't so big, I like the size bagels were in the 60's.

  21. My favorite special childhood breakfast is blueberry pancakes! I do still occasionally eat them, but I've shifted more towards blueberry oatmeal which is equally as tasty.

  22. mmm I enjoy smoked salmon although I haven't had it in ages! My favorite childhood breakfast is when my grandma would make me an egg on toast (over well) with lots of butter! :) grandmas are the best :)

  23. My daughter loves smoked salmon and capers too. She'll eat capers like pickles.

Okay, this is going to sound really bad but my grammpa used to make me bacon sandwichs when I was a kid and I totally loved them. He would take the hot bacon straight from the pan and put it directly onto good ole white bread. A bit of the hot bacon fat would soak into the bread and the sandwich would be all chewy and hot and crunchy and bacony. Good lord that was good. And he knew it wasn't the best food to be giving us so he always had a sneaky happy grin on his face when he was giving them to us.

I haven't thought about that in a long time. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

  26. A couple times a year we go to a fancy brunch at a local resort on a lake. My favorite part is the smokes salmon/cream cheese/capers...making my mouth water - and I just had breakfast! Maybe next weekend we'll have it at home too.

  27. mmm, I love smoked salmon! I never eat it though, and ironically my mom and I were JUST talking about how that is a food we should start buying more often! Strange.
When I think about my childhood weekend breakfasts (which were the "Special ones") I remember chocolate chip pancakes, or trips to the donut shop down the street. My mom always made me eat the healthy cereal during the week, or whole wheat waffles (frozen) but then on the weekends we always got some sort of special treat! We also did muffins a lot, ohhh so delicious.

  28. I'm amazed at this, in NYC every breakfast place has 'lox' and I'd never seen people eat fish with cream cheese until moving here!

My dad was NEVER the kind of guy to do anything in the kitchen. On Sundays, my mom would pack all the kids up early and go to church, leaving my dad to fend for himself. It wasn't until I was old enough to have to skip church for homework that I was home alone with dad and found out he would make the most amazing feta omelets!

  33. The CSA baskets are great, aren't they? CSA is also something I do - small scale - in the summer. It would be so nice to be able to produce for my customers in the winter as well, but it's a little too chilly!
