What's Your Favorite Condiment?

Growing up, I LOVED to completely cover my food in ketchup and mush it all together on my plate. My mother was always horrified and tried to convince me to use less. She'd prepare the most beautiful dishes, often using her homegrown vegetables, serve them in amazing dishes, set the table with love, and all I cared about was making an ugly mess on my plate. My parents always complained that I could never taste the food and that it all must taste the same. And they were right. During the height of my ketchup love, everything tasted like ketchup. And I loved it! I guess I didn't necessarily want to taste the organic Brussels sprouts, green beans, pumpkins, zucchini, and potatoes... All I cared about was ketchup. And lots of it.

Over the years, my love for ketchup has lessened a bit, and I've realized that there is such a thing as too much of a good thing... Plus, tasting the vegetables is actually a good thing! I still buy ketchup, but I make sure that the ketchup I buy is organic and has as few ingredients (that I can pronounce) as possible.

Recently, we introduced some ketchup to the toddler when we had baked sweet potato fries. Well, actually, I wasn't too eager to introduce the ketchup to him, but he saw the teenager eat it, so naturally he wanted some too...

I guess you can say he liked it...

In addition to ketchup, there are many other condiments that I enjoy these days. But lately I am much more selective and make sure that any condiment truly adds something to my dish. Here are some of my favorite condiments:
  • Mustard (Dijon, sweet, garlic, coarse....)
  • Wasabi mayonnaise - a little goes a long way
  • Sriracha - I love adding a bit of spiciness to my food
  • Relish (I used to not like relish, but I have come to love a good relish)
  • Gochujang (a Korean red pepper paste) - I love adding a bit to my rice & noodle dishes...
  • Tapatio hot sauce - so good with burritos, quesadillas, eggs
Questions: What's your favorite condiment? What do you like to eat it with most?

I hope you are enjoying your weekend! :o)

Be well,
Andrea

  3. LOL! Love the photos!! I used to be a ketchup girl myself :)

I don't really use a lot of condiments, I prefer to just use LOTS of seasoning in my cooking. Although I have been putting light mayo on my sandwhich on the rare occasion that I have one. And relish on burgers (again, a rarity!)

  4. Dijon has to be my condiment of choice. I like to dip my sweet potato fries in it...

  5. My favorite condiments include ketchup (I have a mild obsession with it too, hehe), BBQ sauce, gochujang =), miso, mustard, sriracha, and I do love mayonnaise. I try to use just a little bit of the real stuff (mayo)! You've convinced me to check out the wasabi mayo at tj's too!

Ketchup on the toddler's face = absolutely adorable!

  6. Nick uses ketchup on EVERYTHING, and I've been meaning to buy organic, I think that's really the way to go. I used to use ketchup all the time, before I realized my love for mustard! It's so good, and I prefer to to ketchup, plus it has vinegar which prevents blood sugar spikes! I like to use it on everything from hot dogs and cheeseburgers to rice cakes :) I know, kind of weird!

  7. Ketchup would be my condiment choice. I could literally go through almost half a bottle in one sitting. Sad isn't it? haha... But over the years, I've included mustard into the mix. So ketchup and mustard.

  8. I like ketchup, mustard and some salad dressings. but overall I prefer the taste of food than of condiments! :D I guess that's because when i was a kid, my parents couldn't afford condiments!

  9. Mustard, mustard, and more mustard. I will eat mustard on anything. When I crave salt I will eat mustard on pizza. I eat mustard on veggie burgers, all of my sandwiches and I dip fries in it. Thankfully it is a no-cal condiment, but yes, the sodium can get out of hand. For now not too much of a worry and I watch to sodium of everything else so I don't get too carried away.

I had a best friend growing up and she would put ketchup on everything. To prove a point once (and I think she was 10 at the time), she squirted the plain ketchup right into her mouth. I think that is why I don't eat ketchup as much.

  10. Toddler is sooooo cute!

I love flavored mustards; I tried a Cranberry one recently that I really liked. My go-to fave is always dijon. I like Grey Poupon's new creamy dijon that has a more mild flavor. Nice.

  12. Oh goodness, what a cute picture! I am a bit of a ketchup fanatic - agave sweetened organic ketchup with a little bit of Tapiato hot sauce (the best kind ever!) mixed in is soo good. I also love horseradish mustard - it makes the best potato salad!

  13. My go to condiment for sandwiches is definitely mustard. All kinds of mustard depending on the sandwich. I've really been loving hummus lately too though. I know it is not really a condiment but it adds a nice zing and texture to veggie sandwiches.

  14. Frank's Red Hot Sauce, BBQ sauce, mustard & light mayo are my most frequently used.

My girls LOVE ketchup (esp. 3yo) - thank goodness for the organic variety!

  15. those are adorable pictures! Although it doesn't count as a condiment, I love salsa - seriously, I could find a way to put it on about 95% of things I eat :)

  19. I used to be a huge ketchup fan too! Now I just never need it (since I eat FAR fewer burgers, fries, etc.!). I think my favorite condiments are light soy sauce, olive oil (is that one?) and fat-free mayo - use it a lot!!

  20. I love it! I am a HUGE ketchup lover myself. It's not that I put it on unconventional things, it's that the things I need it for, I use copious amounts ;)
Other favs: BBQ sauce, ranch dressing (tisk tisk) and maple syrup :)

  21. I am actually not a huge ketchup fan. I don't even like it on my fries. I must be from another planet... lol!

  22. Love practically all condiments. Current faves are the works for a hot dog, which I had several of at a recent BBQ--ketchup, yellow mustard, and relish.
