Bye Bye to Cable T.V.

Yesterday was our last day of Cable T.V. We had wanted to cancel cable for a while now so that we could focus on other areas in our life and live a more balanced life. (We only watch T.V. after the toddler goes to sleep at night or while he naps; but still, that can add up to quite a bit T.V. watching....) Still, somehow we always found excuses not to cancel cable... A few weeks ago, we finally made up our mind and stuck to it. Here is what I'm looking forward to without Cable T.V.:
  • Talking more
  • Getting work done
  • Catching up on all the books I've wanted to read for a long time
  • Going to sleep earlier/Getting more sleep
  • Watching Netflix DVDs and not keeping the same one for months at a time
  • Blogging without interruptions :0)
Questions: What's your favorite T.V. show at the moment? Have you ever thought of giving up T.V.? Why or why not?

Be well,

  1. Oh wow! I've never even considered it! I'm more how many more channels can we buy?! hehe TV, as sad and loserish as it may be, has always been a huge part of my life! Right now (as in crap summer TV) my favorite is SYTYCD, but I also love Entourage, True Blood, Grey's, Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, Brothers & Sisters, House, Monk, Law & Order - you name it! I'm obsessed! I'm also excited to hear about your non-TV adventures - I can only imagine how much you'll get done!!

  2. I have not had a TV for two years and do not miss it. I waste enough time online (and still don't get around to watching those Netflix movies)! :-)

Congrats for cutting the cable line, I think you'll be surprised at how much you DON'T miss it. I know I was.

I actually don't even have a favorite show right now. But in the fall when the new shows start I LOVE 30 Rock and The Biggest Loser! We still get network stations and the kiddos watch PBS... don't forget to check out the library for movies too. My library has a huge collection and lots of newer releases too.

Almost 20 years and no cable. It's really not too painful. Mary

Great job on getting rid of the cable!!! We didn't have cable for 3 years and now just got it. so................ I'm not sure how long it will last because like you said, we don't watch a lot everyday but it adds up real quick!

I actually haven't watched TV in more than 6 months...I thought I couldn't live with it, but I survived just as well and maybe even got more stuff done! (i.e. blogging)

  7. thats actually a really good idea to get rid of the cable tv...i know my family spends too much time in front of it.

  8. I'm pretty obsessed with True Blood, The Office and 30 Rock. I don't have HBO so I watch True Blood on the internet, but Thursday nights are usually my favorite. I should probably get rid of my cable because it can definitely be addicting. I've given myself a new rule though: if I'm watching TV for more than 30 minutes, I have to do strength training while I'm watching.

  9. Oh what an awesome post!! I grew up with a mom who constantly said "we watch too much tv" and a dad who said "who cares?!", therefore I feel bad ever saying that to Nick. I think about it a lot actually, and I have mentioned the idea of cutting down our TV watching to Nick, but then he always seems to talk his way out of the conversation. I think once we have kids we will set strick rules about it. It's important to me to do more reading, talking, other hobbies, etc, and I think it's important for Nick too, deep down :)

  10. I could ditch TV tomorrow! I LOVE movies though, but can put a dvd on anytime! I do love educational programs for my tot...but the rest of my family would REVOLT!

I used to enjoy Everyday Italian...for cooking tips but really, again, unless it's a movie I love... it's annoying to me!

good good good for you! Life is too short to waste on "dancing with the stars" (sorry if anyone is a fan...i've never even watched it) (I could pick a hundred other useless shows instead)

we do watch Sci Fi...we have a lot of Star Trek on DVD...we watch an episode of Enterprise a night, as a family.

This post is near and dear to my heart as it seems like my life since childhood has revolved around t.v., so I'll likely miss cable t.v. a lot, but who knows? It's already been one whole day, and I really haven't missed it. Haha!

There'll be a bunch of shows I'll miss watching when they first air on cable, but perhaps we'll be able to catch up (slowly but surely) via the Internet and Netflix. Regardless, I'm actually quite happy to try out this experiment.
